Obituary September 5, 1901 Neosho Times Martin A. Weems whose serious sickness was mentioned in this paper last week died at his home in Franklin township last Thursday evening. He had been in poor health nearly all summer, being unable to do any work and had spent awhile at Sulphur Springs. On the Sunday previous he had a stroke of apoplexy and paralysis resulted. The funeral was held Friday at 4 o'clock and was one of the largest ever held in the county as Mr. Weems had a large number of relatives and a host of friends. He was born Sept. 27, 1847, and spent all his life in the county, his father being one of the oldest in this part of the state. Mrs. Weems who was Miss L. A. Kenney and two sons and one daughter survive. The death of Mr. Weems will be heard with sorrow throughout the county as he was widely known and well liked by all who knew him. He had that jovial clever disposition that makes friends and offends no one. He was a consistent member of the M. E. church, South, and also of the Masonic order under whose auspices the funeral was conducted. He was for many years a member of the democratic county committee for his township and always exercised considerable influence not only in the counsels of his party but also as a citizen in his community. In school affairs and all other matters of public concern Mart Weems was always consulted and his opinion generally followed. It is sad to record the death of a citizen of so great influence for good. |
